Frequently Asked Questions
We all have questions when it comes to changing the way we power our homes. Fortunately, we’ve got all of the answers. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
What is a commercial solar system?
A commercial solar system is a solar for business solution that provides renewable energy to power operations. These systems help businesses cut electricity costs, improve energy reliability, and achieve sustainability goals.
What is the solar incentive for businesses?
The South African government offers a tax rebate through Section 12B of the Income Tax Act. This solar tax rebate lets businesses deduct 100% of the cost of a solar installation from their taxable income in the first year, making clean energy adoption more affordable.
Who Is Eligible for the Solar Rebate in South Africa?
The tax rebate in South Africa is for individuals installing solar systems on primary residences. Businesses, however, can claim the solar tax rebate under Section 12B, which requires approved solar equipment and compliance with regulations.
Can VAT Be Claimed on Solar Panels?
Yes, businesses registered for VAT can claim input VAT on solar panels used for business purposes.
I Want to Go Off-Grid, How Can Alumo Help Me?
With an off grid solar system, Alumo provides complete off grid power solutions. From designing a system to replace your traditional utility to managing applications and council registrations, we guide you every step of the way.
What is a technical review?
In order for us to ensure that your solar system operates as promised, we conduct a technical review of your premises before issuing a final proposal. The technical review entails data logging, a thorough assessment of the site layout and noting any special considerations to be made. After the technical review has been concluded, our engineering team will have all the information necessary to design your system.
What purchasing options are there?
We provide outright purchase agreements and solar lease to own options. These solutions, including rent to own solar system plans, allow your business to enjoy solar energy without impacting cash flow.
How long does it take to have my solar energy system installed and operational?
Once the final proposal is approved and payment is received, we begin procuring your solar energy system’s components. Our procurement team provides regular updates on lead times to ensure you’re informed every step of the way.
What solar products do you work with?
We primarily work with Sigenergy, Atess and Huaweii inverters and only Bloomberg Tier 1 Photovoltaic panels.
I already have a generator; how can I still benefit from solar power?
Generators can be very costly when it comes to regular maintenance and fuel. We aim to mitigate as much of those costs as possible by integrating the generator with the solar (energy) system as a backup for severely overcast periods.
Do I have to pay Eskom if I have solar?
Yes, if your solar energy system is still connected to the grid, you may need to pay Eskom a connection fee for access to electricity when solar generation is low. However, if you install an off-grid solar system with battery storage, you can disconnect from Eskom entirely, eliminating electricity bills and achieving full energy independence.
What is the 12BA tax incentive?
The Section 12B tax incentive allows businesses to claim a 100% tax deduction on the cost of assets used to generate renewable energy, including solar energy systems, wind power, hydropower, and biomass. This incentive has no cap on generation capacity, making it highly beneficial for companies investing in commercial solar solutions. By leveraging this solar tax incentive, businesses can significantly reduce their taxable income, lower energy costs, and transition to sustainable energy.
